πΎ Weekly Topic β Harvest πΎ
This week at Our Ladyβs Pre-school, we have been learning all about Harvest, where our food comes from and how we can look after our environment.
One of the highlights was our very own potato harvest! π₯ The children dug in the soil, searched for potatoes and collected what had grown. We also planted spring bulbs, learning about planting, growing and caring for living things. π±
Our Farm Shop was very popular. The children explored different fruits and vegetables, took turns being the shopkeeper and customer, used shopping bags, prices and pretend money, and talked about the foods they recognised. This supported communication, early maths and imaginative play. π₯π
We also became little bakers! π The children measured and sieved ingredients, mixed them together and used their hands to knead the dough. Once our bread was baked, everyone had the opportunity to taste the bread they had made themselves.
As part of our commitment to sustainability and Climate Action, we talked about what happens to food and natural materials that are left over. Instead of throwing everything away, the children helped to make compost using suitable leftover materials from our Harvest activities. β»οΈπ± This introduced the children to the simple idea that some waste can be reused and returned to the soil to help new plants grow.
Throughout the week, the children also enjoyed vegetable printing, counting activities, sensory farm play, autumn books and exploring seasonal produce. They investigated pumpkins, vegetables, soil and natural materials while developing their vocabulary, fine motor skills and understanding of the world.
It has been a wonderful week of digging, planting, baking, composting, counting, creating and imaginative play β helping our children understand the journey from soil to food and back to the soil again. π±π₯πβ»οΈπΎ
