🍂 Weekly Topic – Autumn 🍁

This week at Our Lady’s Pre-School, we have been exploring the wonderful season of Autumn. The children have enjoyed learning through a wide range of hands-on, creative and sensory experiences, both indoors and outdoors.

We explored our outdoor environment and collected autumn treasures, including colourful leaves, conkers, acorns, pine cones, berries and twigs. The children were encouraged to look closely at what they found, notice different colours, shapes, sizes and textures, and talk about the changes we can see in nature at this time of year. We brought our collections back to the Pre-School, where the children could investigate, sort and explore the natural materials together.

Our autumn discoveries inspired lots of creative activities. The children used autumn colours such as red, orange, yellow and brown to paint, print and decorate autumn trees. They experimented with mixing paints, discovering how colours can change when combined, and worked together on a fantastic large-scale autumn picture outdoors. We also created individual autumn artwork, which we proudly displayed in our setting.

During group time, we shared autumn-themed stories, introduced new seasonal vocabulary and encouraged the children to talk about their own experiences and observations. Our autumn sensory and investigation activities provided further opportunities for children to handle natural objects, use tools such as tongs and develop their curiosity through open-ended play.

Throughout the week, the children developed many areas of the EYFS, including Communication and Language through stories, conversations and new vocabulary; Understanding the World through exploring seasonal change and natural materials; Expressive Arts and Design through painting, printing and colour mixing; Physical Development through collecting, handling and manipulating objects and tools; and Personal, Social and Emotional Development through sharing resources, taking turns and working alongside their friends.

It has been a busy and enjoyable week filled with exploration, creativity, conversation and discovery. The children particularly enjoyed taking their learning outdoors and using the natural world around them as part of their play. 🍂🍁🌳
